SHOUT! – The Mod Musical, TADA Theatre, Thursday June 13, 2024
SHOUT! – The Mod Musical at TADA Theatre is not just a jukebox musical! It flips through the years like a musical magazine, taking audiences on a fun-filled journey through the decade.
TADA is known for high quality productions with attention to every detail, and this one does not dissapoint. Upon entering the intimate, 55-seat theatre you will be met with a vibrant POP of colors from the fabulous set designed by Jenna Williamson. Swirling with red, blue, yellow and green it sets the cheery mood for the show and instantly transports you to the “Swinging 60’s.”
The bright and beautiful cast matched the technicolor set: Britt Sommer plays “BLUE GIRL”, Alexandra Lavake plays “GREEN GIRL”, Kelsey Schoenleber plays “RED GIRL” and Olivia Cano plays “YELLOW GIRL.” Each actress has a strong voice and stage presence, and kept up high energy and charisma for the entire show. All four were equally radiant in their roles. You could tell they were truly having a blast together on stage!
I really enjoyed the staging and choreography, with expert direction by Robert D. Rook and choreography by Cris Rook. I noted that one of the actresses, Olivia Cano, also served as Assistant Choreographer.
In between songs were fun, comedic vignettes that will make you laugh. Musical Director Daniel Ikpeama brought together excellent harmonies and beautiful leads from all four women. They sound terrific! Favorite numbers for me included fresh, fantastic renditions of “To Sir, With Love”, “Downtown” , “Goldfinger” and “Son of a Preacher Man.”
Colorful costumes by Shelly Self with assistance from Karen Statham created an extra level for each character to stand out. There were several costume changes to reflect the decade progressing and they all worked really well.
Supported with Technical Coordination by Kevin Welch everything looked and sounded great.
A live band, with Amy Wright on Keyboard and Jacob Dill on percussion, doesn’t miss a beat. They were so spot on throughout the show and really led to a rocking vibe! The cast and band had the audience clapping and singing along.
SHOUT showcases the 1960s when British tunes topped the charts with names such as Lulu, Dusty Springfield and Petula Clark. Without these shoulders to stand on, there would be no Beyonce, Adele or Taylor Swift today. It was surprising to discover that many of the themes in SHOUT are just as important today as they were in the 1960’s.
With a talented cast, a sensational live band, vibrant set and pulsating lights, this fun-filled musical will have you shouting for more! Get your tickets before they sell out!
