On Stage at the Haymarket Theatre: Neil Simon’s “Lost in Yonkers”

The Haymarket Theatre continues its run of “Lost in Yonkers” through September 2.

This Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning play combines Simon’s comic skills with his most affecting and heart filled drama.

Set in 1941, the action is filtered through the eyes of 15-year-old Jay and his 13-year-old brother Arty. When their father is forced to take a job on the road to pay off debt from his deceased wife’s cancer treatment, the two junior Bronx wiseguys are sent to stay with their unwelcoming Grandma Kurnitz.

The play wades through familiar coming-of-age territory amiably enough. But its real dramatic engine is the slow-combustion clash between unyielding Grandma and the emotionally starved Aunt Bella.

Performances August 30 and 31 at 7:30 PM, with a Sunday matinee on September 2 at 2:00 PM. Tickets are still available.

“Lost in Yonkers” is directed by Tom Crew and features a cast of veteran Lincoln actors. The cast includes Ben Arenz, Dylan Wilson, Katy Morehouse, Jason Query, Tim Andersen, Elizabeth Govaerts, and Rachele Stoops Brown. Scenic design is by Patrick Lambrecht with costumes by Andy Dillehay.
