TAFK Returns to a Favorite and Sees Tremendous Growth!

Theatre Arts For Kids presents Seussical Jr., a musical journey through some of Dr. Seuss’s most famous children’s literature, including Horton Hears a Who, Cat in the Hat, and Gertrude McFuzz.

The TAFK community is very excited to reprise this old favorite, as it was one of the first productions TAFK did in 2013. Several of the kids in the first production are still with TAFK and in the current production too. The performers range from 5-15 years old. Hannah Payne (Cat In The Hat) said, “I’m excited! It’s fun to see the differences between the first show and this one and how far we’ve come. It’s fun to see us grow.” Becca Schmucker has also returned to Theatre Arts For Kids to once again provide top-notch choreography that the kids and audiences always look forward to.

The production demonstrates the growth of the returning performers, showing the leaps and bounds of improvement they’ve made over the years. “You get to watch the kids learn and get better,” Brea McClintock (Mayzie La Bird) said. The theater itself has grown too! The kids are excited to perform the show on an improved stage, along with new curtains, and updated light and sound systems.

Every show at Theatre Arts For Kids is connected to their Community Impact Program. Leah Kolar, TAFK’s Artistic Director, sheds light on what this program is all about: “It is very important to me that the kids in the program understand that we are lucky to get to spend our Saturdays together doing theatre. I emphasize the importance of showing our gratitude by giving back to our community in a myriad of ways throughout each year.”

Theatre Arts For Kids recently started a Kiwanis Builders Club through the Lincoln Center Kiwanis Club. TAFK kids become members of the Builders Club which promotes student-led philanthropy.  One of the Builders Club projects this semester is a partnership with Prosper Lincoln and Read Aloud Lincoln. ESL families from Everett and McPhee Elementary Schools will enjoy a special workshop with the cast of Seussical, illuminating the connections between Dr. Seuss books and the musical. The Builders Club hopes to inspire reading through this workshop and is also conducting a book drive so that each child who attends the event will leave with a Dr. Seuss book.

Seussical Jr. will be presented April 11th at 7:00 pm, April 12th at 7:00 pm, and April 13th at 2:00 pm and 7:00 pm at Christ Lincoln (North Ministry). For tickets or more information about the Theatre Arts For Kids program, visit TAFK.org.
