Grease is Summer Lovin’ Fun

By Barb Dorn

Grease, Nebraska Communities Playhouse, Thursday July 18, 2024

NCP (Nebraska Communities Playhouse in Hickman) has done it again. Which will come as no surprise if you have seen any of their productions. This time around, it’s Grease – a perfect-for-summer-lovin’ musical.

The usual expectations we have for NCP were more than met: well cast; great set and props (a car! Or at least, most of one); excellent choreography and execution; and of course, stellar direction from Jill Hauschild and Garret Hope. Cues were tight, lights and sound were amazing. And the costumes were adorable, right down to the delightful Pink Ladies jackets. The entire cast did a fantastic job of catching the vibe of the era, despite the fact most of them don’t even have parents old enough to remember 1959.

But as usual, I’m here to rave about the vocals. The sweet yet strong voice of Sandy (Cartney McGuigan) has you devoted to her inner turmoil about Danny.  Danny Zuko (did you hear my accent there??) portrayed by Ben Brickner, delivers the same tension as he tries to play it cool despite how he feels about Sandy.

And Rizzo! Anna Metzger was wonderful in her portrayal of this familiar character. Anna’s vocals were outstanding. Definitely my favorite if I had to choose – which is a difficult task because all of the solos and ensemble numbers were great, with truly talented singers in this cast.

Plus, you know what? They were simply having FUN! You will, too!!

If you go: Grease runs July 18-28, Thursday-Saturday at 7:30PM, Sunday at 2PM. Ticket information at https://neplayhouse.com.
